Apartment Review for The Calvert Apartments - Alexandria, VA

I have lived in this UDR building for two to three years. Big Mistake, The building has been around since it was built in 1958 and grandfather clauses in when it comes to updates, safety and maintenance. The staff does not care about the building or the tenants. One of the tenants had his kitchen sink back flow with raw sewage all over his apt. And the build staff did nothing until threatened with legal action and that was two days later. I know cause I took him in. The fire department spent one visit writing wall to wall fire code violations well putting out a fire. Several carpenters who lived in the building kept reporting to the city of the shoddy work done by UDR employees. Finally the city got around to telling them to shut the building down in 2012 and bring it up to code. But the UDR office drones deny this report. UDR owns other property in the area and those properties appear to be in similar UDR condition. The elevators are the slowest in town, made by Westing House. Stay away from UDR properties at all cost. In fact one is better finding a room to rent then an Apt because the price charged is never reflected quality. As for noise, my $1000+ a month small apt is on the ground floor with no view except of the cars parked outside my thinly insulated window. We also have shared heating which means even if the heaters is off in one apt but somewhere in the building the heat is being used everyone is charged. None of the appliances are energy saver friendly. They charge a lot at the front end, well you stay and the back end. UDR is greedy corp.
